today, i received a call from a chinese man.. his name was steven and the first thing he said was "assalamualaikum".. unless my ears were playing tricks on me, that is what i heard..he then proceed to ask, who is this? the son? so i figured, has to be the door contractor.. anyway moving on, point is, he gave a islamic greeting.. encik pang aka phillip does that too.. whenever i call him on the phone, he gives his assalamualaikum greeting.. both guys are non muslim.. though its quite cool, well for me anyway.
cos that arabic greeting i feel in my personal opinion need not necessarily tell ppl of your religion.. in arabic, it means "may peace be upon you" and to reply back with waalaikum salam" meaning "may peace be upon you too". i mean, in it doesnt have, hey im from religion A bow to me you infidels.. nope it didnt.. its all about hoping for peace for whoever you are greeting and talking too.. which i think should apply to all religion and atheist alike.. as long as you are deem to be a human being i think you should deserve some measure of peace everybody longs.
im not advocating EVERYBODY use the exact phrase.. no im not.. the reason why its in arabic is cos the religion islam originated in the middle east and ppl there speak arabic and thus the greetings is in arabic.. if it was in china or europe, i figured it be chinese or latin or english or something.. therefore, dont mean, ppl use it, its cos of trying to push their religion's weight around.. nope..
you can just use the english version or come out with your own.. that has the same meaning behind "may peace be upon you" a waddup my dawg is like, hey what's going on with you my brother? maybe more towards, nice to meet you? hahaha i dont know .. play around with it. just remember to spread the word of peace yo!
smoke on the water.
